Cancéropôles were created to structure and accelerate local cancer research, in response to the National Cancer Institute’s recommendations and impulse. The rapid evolution of research in oncology, the development of precision medicine centered towards the patient and the fast development of new technologies are some of the challenges that face the Cancéropôles. Consequently, the Cancéropôle Grand-Est supports research projects and technological platforms opening up new perspectives for patient care. The Cancéropôle also promotes interdisciplinary research projects with innovative concepts. A particular effort has been made to create hubs of expertise and integrate Humanities and social health sciences into existing and new research projects.

To achieve these goals, the Cancéropôle and the National Cancer Institute have established a road map with 7 missions to be fulfilled by the Cancéropôle:

  1. Scientific animation
  2. Detection and funding of emergent research projects
  3. Emergence of clinical research projects
  4. Support of the scientists
  5. Valorisation of research
  6. Emerging technological platforms
  7. Structuring actions

In addition to these missions common to all Cancéropôles, each Cancéropôle has a specific mission highlighting the strength of its local expertise. The Cancéropôle Grand-Est has 2 specific missions: the development of a research program on pancreatic cancer and the setup of crossborder collaboration.

The Cancéropôle also hold yearly call for proposals to support innovative emerging projects or young researchers (PhD Students, clinicians or post-doctoral fellows), to participate to scientific meetings and to help to in the organization of scientific conferences in its territory.

These missions are funded mainly by the French National Cancer Institute, but also by the Cancéropôle members and partners.
